Liberal Arts and Sciences programs and University Colleges are new to German higher education. By taking up these concepts from North America and the Netherlands and adapting them to the German and Freiburg contexts, the University of Freiburg is breaking new ground.

UCF publishes material and books of its own on the LAS program and on higher education in general. Furthermore, others write about UCF. Finally, we follow the broad discourse on higher education. Here you can find:

  • UCF and LAS have repeatedly received media coverage beyond Freiburg, for example in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Die Zeit, or Bayerischer Rundfunk.

  • Heike Schmoll, a journalist with the FAZ, visited UCF in 2012 and wrote about our concept in her article Vergrößerung des Horizonts (Expanding the Horizon).

  • The regional press has covered UCF and the LAS program numerous times, e.g. click, click, and click.

  • In their July issue, the university’s student TV station prepared a short documentary (in German) on interdisciplinary study programs at UCF. They interviewed students and staff, visited classes, the UCF Open Day 2013 as well as the UCF Inauguration and transport a very good impression about what our work is all about: uni.tv freiburg

Higher Education and University Colleges

  • In 2015, Marca Wolfensberger published a comparative study on Talent Development in European Higher Education that includes the LAS program at UCF.

  • Jürgen Kaube of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung discusses integrating the college concept into the German university system (2013).

  • In May 2013, Nicholas Eschenbruch, UCF's founding Academic Director, was invited to join a Round Table on Higher Education: Teaching Citizenship and Values in Higher Education: From Liberal Arts Colleges to Professional Schools, organized by the Hertie School of Governance and the US Embassy in Berlin.

  • In 2013, the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) published a policy paper that focuses on research in Germany but also has implications for UCF. Their Perspectives of the German research system include structural suggestions that are very much in line with our college concept.

  • In August 2012, Prof. Dr. Horst Hippler, President of the German Rectors' Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz), gave an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung about the Bologna Reform. His critical statements sparked a discussion about post-Bologna Higher Education in Germany. One commentator with the Wirtschaftswoche referred to the Liberal Arts and Sciences program at UCF as a path-breaking innovation.

  • UCF's founding Academic Director Nicholas Eschenbruch participated in a conference on Universities and Higher Education hosted by Die Zeit in June 2012.

  • In a May 2012 interview with Spiegel Online, Dieter Lenzen, President of the Universität Hamburg, suggested that German universities should follow the example of American Liberal Arts Colleges.

  • In November 2010, the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat), the leading advisory body to the German federal and state governments on all matters concerning science, research, and the universities, published its Recommendations on the Differentiation of Higher Education Institutions. One recommendation was the establishment of University Colleges and Liberal Arts and Sciences programs.

  • Maarten Hoenen, Professor for Medieval Philosophy and former member of the LAS Board of Studies, published an article in 2009 on the medieval concept of artes liberales.
