UCF Graduation Ceremony 2016

LAS Graduation Ceremony

Every October since 2016, we all come together − UCF staff, students, guests, graduates, families and friends − to celebrate the Liberal Arts and Sciences Graduation Ceremony, to congratulate and bid farewell to the LAS Graduates. Here, we document these celebrations and ceremonies from 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

On October 19, 2019 over 200 people – graduates, families and friends, students, staff and guests – came together to celebrate the 4th LAS Graduation Ceremony.

UCF’s Managing Director Paul Sterzel opened the ceremony and called in the graduates. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Hans-Joachim Gehrke (UCF Director of Outreach) gave the first welcome address, followed by Nermin Abbassi and Julius Nebel on behalf of the 2019 LAS graduates. A poetic interlude by Clara Berger, Judith Horvath, and Jennifer Kirsch inspired all guests before the ceremony's highlight.

Prof. Dr. Sitta von Reden (UCF Dean of Studies) and Dr. Ursula Glunk (UCF Academic Director) presented the ceremony's main act, the conferring of degrees. Individual congratulations and farewells came from Dr. Ryan Plumley, Dr. Simon Büchner, Dr. Sabine Sané, and Dr. Liudmila Mikalayeva for the LAS Majors.

The graduates’ contribution – by Katarzyna Schwartz, Rosa-Lena Lange and Charlotte Weinreich – was a wonderful film about their four years of studying LAS. A further highlight was the recognition of the LAS alumni organization as an UCF “Fachchapter” within the Alumni Association of the University of Freiburg. Prof. Dr. Ursula Schaefer (Förderverein Alumni Freiburg e.V.) presented the official accreditation to Gregor Ranft of the LAS alumni organization.

LAS Graduation Ceremony 2016

Since the establishment of University College Freiburg in 2012, we have
developed together and as individuals, have progressed and taken detours. On October 15, 2016 we reached a new milestone: the first Liberal Arts and Sciences Graduation Ceremony.

In October 2012, 78 pioneer students started their LAS studies and from the beginning became part of the fascinating process of developing the College. They were – and are – curious, demanding, and engaged at UCF and beyond. In the past four years, they have learned about the foundations of knowledge, science, and academic inquiry. They have chosen their LAS Major, spent time abroad, and have now graduated and are ready for their next steps. From the beginning, we were convinced of our program and our students. Now, we and especially our graduates can be proud that this has been recognized by prestigious institutions all around the world.

On October 15, 2016, the University, UCF, students, graduates, families and friends came together to celebrate this occasion – a milestone for each student and for the College. The Badische Zeitung covered the event on October 17. And the current issue of the University Newspaper uni'leben features an article on the LAS program and its first graduates. Press information on the Graduation Ceremony is available at the University Press Department

Over the course of the Ceremony and Reception, many words of gratitude were voiced. We would like to thank all who helped make this special day possible – a day that in our opinion perfectly reflects the spirit of work and play at University College Freiburg.
